Portage Manor: Partner for Public Purposes

St. Thomas More Academy (STMA) and ecological expert Steve Sass have proposed a plan to save and restore the Portage Manor property. STMA and Sass have a vision of an expertly guided community conservation project that draws private individuals and institutions together in the public service of repurposing the old county-home into a new classical school and civic habitat for environmental, social, and educational encounter.
Welcome to our vision for a harmonious blend of education, nature, and history. We aim to establish a strong foundation for future generations through our initiatives:
-
A Classical Revival school dedicated to teaching the principles and techniques of classical education
-
A nature preserve that offers a peaceful retreat and promotes environmental stewardship.
-
A commitment to honoring the historical significance of Portage Manor, ensuring its legacy is preserved and celebrated.

Community Education and Access
The nature preserve would be a sanctuary for both nature lovers and the community. Explore scenic hiking trails, engage in enriching educational opportunities, and enjoy the great outdoors with friends and family. Experience the beauty of nature while fostering a deeper connection to the environment.

History Integration
South Bend, founded by the explorer Robert LaSalle holds a rich historical connection with the Native Americans that originally inhabited the land. This landmark serves as a reminder of the vibrant cultures that existed long before European settlement. Honoring this history is essential to educate our community about the significance of these early inhabitants and their contributions to the region. Let us cherish and promote the stories that have shaped South Bend, ensuring that the legacies of both LaSalle and Native American tribes are remembered and celebrated.
